The Great Wall of China is a place worth visiting

Eliza, April 16, 2023

The Great Wall of China is one of the seven wonders of the world which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Traversing along the mountains of northern China, this wall is composed of smaller walls that reach a length of 8.851 km.

Over 2,000 years old, the Great Wall of China is one of China’s most popular tourist destinations. It is recorded that 9.9 million foreign tourists come each year only to the Badaling area. Every day there are 80 thousand tourists who flock there.

For those who are lazy to jostle with tourists, here are some tips for traveling to the Great Wall of China:

1. Choose the right path

Some of the locations that are usually chosen by tourists from Beijing are Juyongguan, Badaling, Mutianyu, as well as Jinshanling and Simatai. Juyongguan is located closest to Bejing. It takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to drive to reach this section. Juyongguan is also one of the three most important areas of the Great Wall, where there was a war here long ago.
Badaling is the most favorite part of the tourists. There are many facilities such as museums and shopping places. But too many tourists.
Mutianyu is further away but less crowded and nestled between the mountains so it has good views. This route is the most child-friendly compared to the others.
While Jinshanling and Simatai are very far away, they are perfect for those who like adventure.
Simatai is also the only route open for excursions at night.

2. Take time

If you only spend one or two hours at this tourist spot, surely you will miss a lot.
You need at least above three hours to get the most out of this trip.

3. Choose the right season

It is not recommended to visit the Great Wall of China in summer, or around July-August, because the stifling heat coupled with the large number of people will make the trip torturous.
Spring and autumn will be the right time to come to this tourist spot.

4. Don’t forget to bring drinking water

Bring sufficient supplies such as water, sunscreen, and a hat when visiting this place. Especially if you come to it closer to summer.

5. Consider taking a tour

If you don’t want to bother with planning your itinerary, many hotels in Beijing now provide tour packages to visit the Great Wall of China.

6. Avoid weekends or holidays

Not only foreign tourists who come to this tourist spot, but also local tourists.
You have to be smart in choosing the time of your visit so you can enjoy the Great Wall without having to jostle with thousands of other tourists.

7. Badaling and Mutianyu have friendlier access

If you have concerns about access options then Badaling and Mutianyu will be the right choice. Both of these places have cable car transportation if tourists are lazy to walk far.
Meanwhile, Badaling itself provides access for wheelchair users.

8. Don’t expect clear skies

When tourists come to a tourist spot they certainly want the best view. But don’t get your hopes up when you visit the Great Wall of China.
Beijing City is often covered in fog that can cover the Great Wall. Try to come when the weather is windy or after it rains.
